How does Zolpidem Work?

Zolpidem increases the activity of GABA, a natural brain chemical that helps you relax and may facilitate falling asleep.

How is Zolpidem given (Dosage Forms)?

Zolpidem is available in the following oral dosage forms: Ambien, Ambien CR, Edluar, and generic Zolpidem.

  • 6.25 mg oral extended-release tablets
  • 12.5 mg oral extended-release tablets
  • 7.5 mg oral capsules
  • 5 mg oral tablets
  • 10 mg oral tablets
  • 1.75 mg sublingual tablets
  • 3.5 mg sublingual tablets
  • 5 mg sublingual tablets

How should I Store Zolpidem?

Oral tablet and capsule. Zolpidem tablets and capsules should be stored at room temperature between 20°C and 25°C. It may be exposed to temperatures between 15°C and 30°C for short periods, such as during transportation. Store in a cool, dry place.

Sublingual tablet. Zolpidem sublingual tablets should be stored at room temperature between 20°C and 25°C. It may be exposed to temperatures between 15°C and 30°C for short periods, such as during transportation. Please do not remove the sublingual tablet from the single-dose container until ready to take it.

What are the Common Side Effects of Zolpidem?

Below are the most common side effects of Zolpidem. Tell your doctor if you experience any side effects like:

  • Headache
  • Drowsiness
  • Dizziness
  • Diarrhea

What are the Serious Side Effects of Zolpidem?

Although they occur less frequently, Zolpidem’s most serious side effects and what to do if they occur are described below.

Zolpidem can cause severe allergic reactions. Stop taking it and get help immediately if you experience any symptoms of a severe allergic reaction.

  • Trouble breathing or wheezing
  • Palpitations
  • Fever or general feeling of illness
  • Swollen lymph nodes
  • Swelling the face, lips, mouth, tongue, or throat
  • Difficulty swallowing or tightness in the throat
  • Itching, rash, or bright red bumps on the skin called hives
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Dizziness, lightheadedness, or fainting
  • Stomach cramps
  • Joint pain

Abnormal thoughts or behavior. Several abnormal thoughts and behaviors have been reported during treatment with Zolpidem and other sedative-hypnotics. Tell your doctor if you experience the following symptoms:

  • Behaving more aggressively or more aggressively than usual
  • agitation
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Depression that gets worse
  • Seeing or hearing things that are not real

Next-day drowsiness. You may feel sleepy or dizzy the morning after taking Zolpidem. Worsening Depression and Suicidal Thoughts or Actions. Zolpidem can worsen depression and cause suicidal thoughts or actions in a small number of people. If you are about to harm yourself, call 999 or call 988, the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. Call your doctor immediately if you experience it.

Liver Problems. Zolpidem should not be used if your liver is not functioning properly. If the following symptoms.

  • New or increased thoughts of suicide or death
  • Attempt suicide
  • New or increased feelings of anxiety, depression or other unusual changes in mood or behaviour

Breathing Problems. Zolpidem can cause slow or shallow breathing, especially if you have breathing problems due to another medical condition or are taking other medicines that can slow your breathing. Tell your doctor if you experience severe drowsiness or breathing problems, especially when taking Zolpidem, or your dose increases. Seek emergency medical help if you have any of the following symptoms.

  • Changes in skin color, including bluish discoloration of your lips and fingernails
  • Confusion
  • Shortness of breath
  • Dizziness, lightheadedness, or fainting
  • Changes in your pulse or rhythm, such as a fast, slow, pounding, or skipping heartbeat
  • Slow or shallow breathing
  • Excessive sleepiness or difficulty staying awake

Memory Loss. Zolpidem can cause short-term memory loss. Taking a higher dose increases your risk of this side effect. Talk to your doctor if you experience memory loss.

Warnings and precautions

Who should not use Zolpidem?

Allergies to ingredients. People who are allergic to any of the following should not use Zolpidem.

  • Zolpidem
  • Ambien
  • Edluar
  • One of the ingredients in each product provided

Your pharmacist can tell you all the ingredients in the specific zolpidem products they stock.

Activity patterns when not fully Awake. Suppose you have been performing activities while you are not fully awake, such as sleepwalking, driving, or talking on the phone. In that case, your doctor may recommend a different medication after taking Zolpidem.

Liver Problems. Zolpidem should not be used if your liver is not functioning properly. If you are concerned about the health of your liver, your doctor may do tests to see if your liver is working well enough to take this medication.

What do you think I should know about Zolpidem before I use it?

Only take Zolpidem if it has been prescribed to you by your doctor. Take it as directed.

Do not share Zolpidem with anyone else, even if they share your condition. It may be harmful to them.

Keep Zolpidem out of the reach of children. Zolpidem is a controlled substance because it can be abused or lead to addiction. Keep Zolpidem in a safe place to prevent it from being stolen. It is illegal to sell or give away this medication.

Only take Zolpidem once a night, just before bedtime. Do not take Zolpidem if you cannot stay in bed for 7 to 8 hours before needing to be active again. Some sublingual tablets of zolpidem tartrate can be used if you are in bed for at least 4 hours before waking up. For more information, please consult your pharmacist or another healthcare provider.

Do not crush, chew, or break zolpidem extended-release tablets.

Zolpidem capsules should not be opened, crushed, or chewed.

Do not swallow zolpidem sublingual tablets or take them with water. Place the tablet under your tongue, where it will dissolve quickly.

Zolpidem should not be taken with food or immediately after a meal. Zolpidem may take longer to work if you take it with food.

Do not take Zolpidem if you have consumed alcohol in the evening or before bedtime. This may increase your risk of drowsiness or dizziness the next day.

Zolpidem is for short-term use only. If Zolpidem does not work or your sleep problems worsen after 7 to 10 days, call your doctor.

Zolpidem may affect your alertness or coordination. Please do not drive or engage in other activities the following day.

People who are 65 years of age and older may be more sensitive to side effects such as dizziness or drowsiness, which can increase the risk of falls when taking Zolpidem. Talk to your doctor about your risks if you fall into this age group.

Zolpidem can cause rebound insomnia the first or second day after stopping use. You may feel restless or have trouble falling asleep.

These symptoms may include sweating, shaking, nausea, or stomach and muscle cramps.

What should I tell my doctor before taking Zolpidem?

Tell your doctor about all your health problems, prescription and over-the-counter medications, vitamins/minerals, herbal products, and other supplements you are taking. This information will assist you in determining whether Zolpidem is suitable for you.

Discuss one of the following in particular:

Substance abuse Disorder. Inform your doctor if you have previously abused drugs or alcohol. Zolpidem is classified as a controlled substance and has the potential for abuse.

Current and past Health Problems. Inform your doctor if you experience any of the following symptoms.

  • Liver or kidney problems
  • History of mental illness, including depression or suicidal thoughts
  • Lung or breathing problems, such as B. chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
  • Myasthenia gravis
  • Sleep apnea

Other medications and supplements. Zolpidem may interact with other medications and supplements. Before taking Zolpidem, tell your doctor about all prescription and over-the-counter medications, vitamins/minerals, herbal products, and other supplements you are taking. Pregnancy. Taking Zolpidem during the third trimester of pregnancy may cause your baby to have breathing problems or unusual sleepiness at birth. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. Your doctor will advise you on whether you can take Zolpidem during pregnancy or while trying to conceive.

Breastfeeding. Zolpidem passes into breast milk. Please inform your doctor if you are currently breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed. Your doctor will advise you if you can take Zolpidem while breastfeeding.

Interactions

Does Zolpidem interact with Food or Drink?

Avoid taking Zolpidem with or right after a meal. Drinking alcohol while on Zolpidem may heighten the risk of drowsiness. Do not take Zolpidem if you plan to consume alcohol in the evening or before bedtime.

Are there any interactions between Zolpidem and other medicines?

Always tell your doctor about any prescription or non-prescription medicines, vitamins/minerals, herbal products, and other nutritional supplements you are taking.

Be especially careful to discuss whether you take any of the following medicines before taking Zolpidem.

  • Rifampicin is a medicine often used to treat an infection called tuberculosis.
  • Ciprofloxacin, a medicine used to treat bacterial infections
  • St. John’s wort, a dietary supplement that can be used to treat depression
  • Ketoconazole or itraconazole (Sporanox, Tolsura), medicines used to treat fungal infections
  • A tricyclic antidepressant such as amitriptyline or imipramine, even if not used for depression
  • Any other medicine that causes dizziness or drowsiness, such as sleeping pills and anti-anxiety medicines
  • An opioid such as oxycodone, morphine, codeine, or fentanyl, a medicine used for certain types of pain

Some other medicines can change Zolpidem’s blood levels. Inform your doctor about all the medications you are currently taking or have recently taken.
